Political party
The AIADMK is Tamil Nadu's main opposition party, founded in 1972 by film actor and politician M. G. Ramachandran after he broke from the DMK. The party governed Tamil Nadu under J. Jayalalithaa for much of the period between 1991 and 2016. After Jayalalithaa's death in December 2016, internal leadership disputes weakened the organisation, and the party lost the 2021 state assembly election to the DMK. It is currently led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
