After the INDIA alliance's stronger-than-expected showing in 2024, Rahul Gandhi was sworn in as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha — the first effective LoP since 2014. Congress won 99 seats, finally crossing the 10% threshold required for official opposition recognition.
The BJP won 240 seats — 32 short of a majority — forcing Modi's third term to depend on coalition partners TDP and JDU. The INDIA alliance won 234 seats, with Congress winning 99 (up from 52). Rahul Gandhi became Leader of the Opposition.

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of internal Emergency, suspending fundamental rights and civil liberties for 21 months. The press was censored, opposition leaders were imprisoned, and the 42nd Amendment — later called the 'mini-constitution' — was passed during this period.
A power struggle between Indira Gandhi and the Congress 'Syndicate' led to a formal split. Indira Gandhi's faction — INC(I), later simply INC — won a landslide in 1971 on the 'Garibi Hatao' slogan, consolidating her dominance over Indian politics.
The First Amendment added the Ninth Schedule, allowing laws placed in it to be shielded from fundamental rights challenges. It also curtailed the right to property and freedom of speech to allow land reform legislation. This set a precedent for using the amendment power to circumvent judicial review.
The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India, drafted under the chairmanship of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. It came into force on 26 January 1950. The Constitution established India as a sovereign democratic republic.
The Constituent Assembly appointed B.R. Ambedkar as Chairman of the Drafting Committee for the Constitution of India. Over the next two years he guided the drafting of what he called 'a unique document' blending social justice with parliamentary democracy.
India became an independent nation at midnight on 14–15 August 1947. Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the 'Tryst with Destiny' speech. The INC formed the first government with Nehru as Prime Minister.
A.O. Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji, and Dinshaw Wacha founded the INC in Bombay, initially as a platform for educated Indians to present grievances to the colonial government. It became the principal vehicle of the independence movement.
